The Great Australian Schwa video activities for upper years

The schwa is the most common vowel sound in English. You and your students will be working with the schwa in most spelling lessons (even though it’s not formally taught until Unit 36). We’ve created a fun video ’The Great Australian Schwa’ to help shed light on this ubiquitous but tricky sound.

Why not use The Great Australian Schwa to introduce the schwa to your upper years students. Here’s how:

  1. Before playing the video, tell students they will need to listen (or look) for three words containing the schwa.
  2. Watch the video as a class.
  3. Ask students to share the words they noticed in the video that contain the schwa – and identify whether the schwa is at the beginning, middle or end of the words.
